Is Bush a Neocon?
By Kirt R. Poovey
I recently sent an email to personal friends in which Ilana Mercer wrote an article for WorldNetDaily.com and detailed why President George W. Bush is a neoconservative. I thought it wise to make sure that everyone knew the truth. A good friend emailed back wanting to know why I even bothered to read such stuff. He implied that I should ignore this “dogma” because God is in control. He specifically referenced 1 Samuel 2: 1-11.
Perhaps, there are others reading this column that wonder the same thing. Here is my reply:
I guess I am a little dense because I really don't see totally how Samuel ties into this. Yes, God is in control, but we do not sit blindly and let those in power do whatever they will. If so, then the Germans were right to allow Hitler to send the Jews and others to the gas chambers and to support him in all his conquests.
“Where is God in what this man says?” you ask. I would say that God is using him to spread the truth. God is truth and would have all of his children know the truth, but many are blind -- and willingly so.
God calls me to enlighten and educate those who do not know the truth that they may be able to discern for themselves. Ignorance may be bliss, but that is exactly what the proverbial frog is in a pan of water slowly brought to a boil. He is ignorant of the truth and it leads to his death. If only someone would have told him that the water would soon cook him.
I have personally tracked President Bush's programs and his agendas. He is no conservative. While he may have a few conservative traits, they are buried beneath mounds of liberalism. Bush and the Republicans have buried this country in more debt than even Bill Clinton, and Mr. Bush has strongly pushed forward nearly every program that Clinton started. Only a few has he opposed -- and then only meekly. When Bush says that he wants a prescription drug plan for the elderly that meets Teddy Kennedy's approval, then it's obvious whose camp he is really in. There are other pieces of legislation in which Kennedy has been the litmus test that Bush has used. Since when do conservatives ask Mr. Super Liberal if their plan meets his requirements? Naturally, publicly, Kennedy says it’s never enough, but it is a "down payment".
For Democrats the full wealth of the US would never be enough for their programs. It pains me to say it, but I've said it before and I will say it again, "George W. Bush is Bill Clinton with a conscience."
It's not dogma, it's facts. It's reality. It's painful, but the truth many times is.
I leave it in God's hands, but He calls us to use our hands to oppose that which is wrong. He uses us to do His work. We must open ourselves up to take the difficult path, to embrace the difficult task, to speak the truth boldly -- even when it is uncomfortable. It would be much easier for me to sit back, be content in who God has put in charge (be it Clinton, Bush, or Hitler), and not trouble myself with any of it. However, I am reminded of a staunch Christian in Nazi Germany who stood up against almost the whole church of Germany and Hitler himself to proclaim that the leader that God had put in control of his country was wrong. I speak of non other than Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He paid with his life. Are we willing to pay with our lives, or even a little discomfort, to speak the truth in America?
I pray that I can have the courage of Bonhoeffer.
Why is it that so many conservatives are blinded by the Bush administration? Is it because they are so desperate after Clinton that they welcome anything that a professed born-again Christian puts forth as his agenda? I hope my friend will see the light. I hope all conservatives will see the light. Is there an alternative from the Democrats? No!
Why do I decry Bush then? To wake America up so she will demand a change.
"We will stand, fight, and die to defend our country; but we will not blindly trust it. Even our Founding Fathers distrusted a large, centralized, all-powerful federal government -- so should we. Always be on guard to discern the truth and defend it at all costs."
